Letting Words Fall Away
It can be most difficult to be silent. Words roll off the lips, and the mouth can move far quicker than the mind.
Yet, the space for silence is as immense as the universe.
But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him. (Habakkuk 2:20)
Silence subdues my soul so I can hear from another.
Silence is too the quiet applause of the soul towards another.
Silence comes from the shelter of humility. It is those who would quieten their tongue who are not assertive. They flee boasting.
Devotion is offered through silence. This is an act of respect to honor the other, thus permitting them to speak first.
The mere silence of love has the power to drown out all of life's chaos.
Silence is an act of worship to listen to a loved one. In speech a man makes himself known, yet when the relationship is of love he is already known, thus words can safely drop away.
And the good Lord yet reminds to this day:
As to life, as to death - I will call. I call into existence and take out of existence; let all the earth be silent before Me. No petition can they make, nor can they offer Me any improvement. I cannot be added to or subtracted from. I owe mankind nothing, nor can he call Me to account. A defenceless earth can plead no case. Let it fall silent before Me; for it contains no power of persuasion and no gift can it bring. Earth is to be silent when I speak.
Is not a man's biggest impediment to hearing the Lord's voice - his own voice, his own din?
