Pillar 2 ~ Silence
Soul Snack 39/14 ... Have we Christians blindly bought a profound lie, in fact a MASSIVE DECEIT? We hold to the deception that our words are more important than our silence ~ Henri Nouwen. Nouwen further explained we all have learned to abhor a vacuum, so we fill it with noise.
This too is often the default position of our shaky attempts to withdraw with the Lord. The praise music is switched on, or our lips bleat an endless shopping list in prayer. Neither praise nor prayer is wrong at all, yet the soul requires silence as much as the Lord requests it. Silence is a divine instruction to His creation.
Be silent before the sovereign Lord, for the day of the Lord is near. (Zephaniah 1:7a)
Silence is spiritual preparation for the activity of God, to apprehend the divine movements.
Noise is the thief of peace, it is the enemy of rest, and the blanket carelessly tossed across listening.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters (Psalm 23:2)
To hear, to receive and then to recover, first must be found the healthy meadows and the silent waters; for these are the leading of the Lord.
Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. (Ecclesiastes 5:2)
It is in silence that the Lord is heard, His heart is revealed and He stokes my fires within.
When I say less to God, He can say more to me.
