You are in Gethsemane too...

An already heaving Messiah weeps in Gethsemane. It is the last night before His crucifixion.

You are in Gethsemane too, hidden but watching. Is your heart also bleeding and shredded? Would Jesus hear your weeping?

How will you describe the arrest of God?

What if you are entangled too in His betrayal? How will you justify the events?

No doubt if you are Caiaphas the high priest your chest is swollen in triumph:

at last we have seized Him.

Maybe if you are an officer of the temple guard you objectively report:

fourteenth of Nisan, eleven thirty P.M., arrested one Jewish prisoner - Jesus of Nazareth.

But John the Apostle (and Gospel writer) records our Lord's betrayal most differently:

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am He,’ Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, ‘I am He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground. (John 18:4-6)

The Lord instead of waiting steps forward to meet the armed crowd. In complete control and confidence Jesus openly identifies Himself. Their response is literally to fall to the ground. Only with the mere lifting of His voice Jesus overpowers the army of the world's greatest empire.

Unwittingly this armed crowd of hatred fall at His feet and worship Him. Then they will declare war on Jesus with ancient beams, hammer and six inch nails.

This detachment of Roman soldiers, with its commander and Jewish officials are arrested by Jesus before they arrest Him.

The Last Word:

We have a Savior that even the rude, the ignorant and the violent would worship. How much more can we worship, for we stand on the resurrection side of the cross!
