The Victory of the Lamb
And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, reach holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Revelation 5:5-8)
The apostle John sees the response of the angelic powers when the Lamb is declared worthy. They fall down and worship with harps in their hands.
But before he hears the songs of praise John sees a wonderful vision that brings comfort to God’s suffering saints.
The bowls of incense that John sees ar e the prayers of God’s people. Our prayers are a fragrant, worshipful offering to God and He delights to hear them.
But what are these ‘prayers’? In the next chapter John hears the martyrs pray, ‘How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?’ (6:10). Their cry is for justice and vindication.
The God of justice, who grieves over the sufferings of His saints and longs for the universal worship of His Son, delights in such prayers. And the visions of Revelation that follow assure us that Day will not be long in coming.
