The Shades of Life
Soul Snack 161/10 ... Walking alone
The winding path through life is a variegated one. The scenery is constantly changing. The end appears so distant, elusive and certainly unseen, until it is finally reached. Its presence then feels both immediate and permanent. Suddenly the path has become so short.
Luscious green gardens and verdant forests adorn the path. Yet the rich will become arid and the verdant barren, as the path is traversed. It will continue through the bright season of warmth to a chilling season of numbness or even desperation. Yet the path can only ever be walked by going forward, to turn around is to see that the path has already crumbled and is simply gone.
The path ascends mountains of great and delightful grandeur and subsequently descends into the valleys of the deepest darkness. Yet upon this path all must walk.
The native cunning of man is impotent to change the direction and scenery of this path. Neither can the skillful acts of man manage where the path will stop.
Man's impotence upon this path is to be humbly recognised and even enjoyed. It is only then that man will choose to not walk this path alone.
Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
"I find no pleasure in them"- before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain; (Eccl 12:1-2)
