Stop fighting for God
Soul Snack 192/10 ... The Elijah Enigma
To my mind, if there is an archetypal prophet, an enigma to the common mind, a man given to a roller-coaster faith, it must be Elijah.
In the scriptures he appears quickly and briefly. He then disappears with an equal pace. This man of pensive passion still scrambles for my attention to this day, for none have achieved as he did.
Utterly exhausted from victory over the prophets of Baal, and defeating King Ahab's chariot in a foot race, he then receives a most immediate death threat from Queen Jezebel. His flight first takes him to the wilderness, and with subsequent divine intervention, to a cave on Mt Sinai. In his distress he bemoans both his existence and God's activity. It is then that Elijah both hears and receives from God.
It was not until Elijah stopped fighting for God and chose to be still with God that he was then able to hear from God.
After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" (1 Kings 19:12-13)
