Ancient Superannuation

Soul Snack 63/10 ... Ancient Superannuation

Jesus sagely tells a greedy enquirer a parable about a rich, but foolish farmer. (Lk 12:13-21)

Jesus recounts how, with great industry, a farmer directed his life's entire efforts towards his own ancient, near-eastern superannuation fund.

He constructed new silos and stored more crops with an indulgent diligence. His goal was:

'... and I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." ' (Lk 12:19)

Yet, both the hollowness and foolishness of this farmer's hope is immediately revealed. The very night that he finishes his work, is also the very night God finishes his life (v 20).

"I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps." (Jer 10:23)

Wisdom is absent from the seeking of my will, but present in the seeking of His will.
