Unpacking God
Soul Snack 223/13 ... Unpacking God
Christianity trades upon the minds of learned men.
The college of Christianity has appointed its own popes, penned its own torahs and built its own tabernacles. Faith has become complicated (even confused) under the rule of theology.
A minimalist Calvary Christianity is to be greatly desired.
The time has arrived to address the dross and tarnish of at least 600 years of accumulated Christian knowledge.
There remains a pure faith, a simple salvation and a transparent truth. Such is available to both the peasant and the professor alike.
Simultaneously to the Reformation this prophetic prayer was uttered:
Dear Lord, give me the truths which are veiled by the doctrines and articles of faith, which are masked by the pious words of sermons and books. Let my eyes penetrate the veil, and tear off the mask, that I can see your truth face to face. Amen - St John of the Cross
The doctrines, the articles of faith and the pious words have become the arbiter of truth when they cannot be the guarantor of truth.
The unknown (and illiterate) thief upon the cross saw a most pained smile as he hung at Jesus' side, for this thief knew all that is ever needed to be known.
"Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, " I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." (Lk 23:42-43)
It is not until you too are tied inescapably on your cross beside Jesus' cross, that you will too learn all that you ever need to know.
