Soul Snack 9/13 ... The Cash Dash
Today is my son's birthday. He is now eagerly accustomed to this infrequent event. It will transpire quickly. For him it will be far too quick.
Now moving into his senior teenage years that 'right' present becomes ever more elusive and expensive.
The CD/DVD is always an acceptable standby. But somehow CDs & DVDs are common in their presence and hollow in their personal value. Such a gift really doesn't say 'you're special, I love you.'
Cash always appears to be the perfect standby. What teen is not driven to consume? What teen could refuse a cash gift? What teen would even think them shallow?
A sole card proffered as a gift looks so careless, but invites the reflection - 'maybe there is cash inside.' Surely upon opening the card even a few bank notes would glide silently to the floor? In fact birthdays these days can so resemble a dash for cash.
Many (normally wives I find) demonstrate great skill and grace in giving. They select gifts well that engender the necessary message of 'you're special' and 'I love you.'
The perfect God knows (even a liitle bit better than my wife) how to give value, affirmation and care through His gifts. He gives me Himself. No cash dash, just Christ.
His present to me is that He wants to live with me. I am His dwelling place. He has chosen to live in and with ME. His present is His presence.
