Socrates agrees with Jesus ...

Soul Snack 9/97 ... Socrates says!

Melting continuously within the crucible of life's experience is an inexchangeable amalgam of both pleasure and pain.

Well over 4 centuries prior to Jesus pursuing the paths of Palestine, Socrates sagely reflected that "the unexamined life is not worth living."

Within my crucible lies the sum total of my extravagances, indulgences and impulsiveness. These thoroughly pollute, even obscure my graces, goodness and self-restraints. If only my crucible no longer contained dross but only delight!

Socrates was right! It is so healthy to examine my life.

Recognition of sin refuses to hide from reality and it weeps in shame. This is successful life examination.

The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly. Luke 22:61-62

Recognition of sin is finding health in the hurt to my spiritual health. It defeats satan's work against me too!

Even after my sin Jesus will never say "I told you so!" He will certainly enquire carefully (even repeatedly) if my devotion remains with Him. (see Jn 21:15-17)

(Actually He already knows of my devotion, He simply asks that I may know too.)

My opportunity to confess devotion is His opportunity to forgive and restore. Even before Socrates He knew the wisdom of an examined life.

I can examine my life now or wait for Him to examine it later! Which do I want?
