Listening for God
Soul Snack S17/10 ... Divine Thunder
This river bed held untold stories of God's activity bringing both adventure and terror over countless milennia. Boulders had become stones, stones had become pebbles. The pebbles preened and polished with great tenacity by the master craftsman.
Rising high in a cloud shrouded mountain range, this once mighty river knew no hindrance. No human effort could restrain this river in its 'anger'.
Their bivouac had begun two days previously. These three youngsters were so keen to explore, so keen to escape.
Between the banging upon tent pegs, they could faintly hear the growing rumble. As a snowball gathers snow so too this thunder gathers volume, awakening the whole canyon.
Hesitantly the three stopped - then in unison, without speaking a word they stretched out rapidly towards higher ground, leaving all behind. They still had each other.
As they tumbled through gnarly rocks, crags, and shinned themselves on stumps, breathlessly they looked behind and down. They were correct! Thundering with absolute might through a most recently dry river bed was an arrogant, unassailable wall of foaming water. They were drenched by the spray, not drowned by the torrent.
Realistically (sadly?) God too 'thunders' at us to take us to higher ground, even to leave the unnecessary behind.
Faith will listen for His thunder. Ask Him to show you how to recognise it. You may escape drenched, but you will preserve your life.
