The Couch & the Cross

Soul Snack 182/11 ... The Couch & the Cross

Jesus is bold, forthright and unconstrained. He is not backward in coming forward.

To both the diligent and the lethargic His claims echo with an equal veracity but who will respond? ...

' ... who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?’ declares the LORD. (Jer 30:21b)

In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. (Lk 14:33)

There is no easy-believism in these words. There is no couch from His cross nor comfort to His callings.

Are His commands too difficult, His invitations too strong or His heart simply callous to your needs?

Is Jesus unreasonable, too demanding and maybe foolishly coercive?

Was His tragedy for your head but not also for your heart?

I can only reflect - what is comfortable about a cross, what is justified in injustice and how does piercing not hurt?

Jesus makes no claim on you or me that He hasn't already lived.

Too many learn religion but miss out on faith.

For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. (Phil 2:21)
