History's most important brekkie ...
Soul Snack 50/10 ... Tantalising Breakfast Distractions
Seven hapless fisherman enjoyed their fill that morning. The impossible they had literally seen, received and then enjoyed.
Miraculously Jesus was with them. Miraculously He had over supplied their needs, and now surprisingly they had witnessed God's delivered forgiveness, mercy and restoration. These blessings were all enshrined in Jesus' thrice repeated invitation to Peter ... 'feed my sheep.'
Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?"). When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?" Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." (John 21:20-22)
Captivated by Jesus' comment to him the apostle Peter immediately became distracted.(v21).
So quickly the focus of Peter and the others had changed (v23). Instantly his thoughts are removed from:
- a failed fishing trip that miraculously becoming successful,
- a breakfast with Jesus as the chef feeding His own sheep,
- his gracious and generous restoration from Jesus and
- the fact he was only 1 of 7 invited to breakfast by Jesus (an elite group) to THE most important breakfast in history.
Immediately their distractable humanity was too evident. Immediately Peter needed the Master's re-direction. Immediately they had all become more focussed on John than on Christ, even though Jesus had just done so much for them.
John's future could be a tantalising distraction for them. Jesus re-focussed them quickly... 'you must follow me.' Is there ever another choice?
To breakfast with Jesus each morning is to permit no tantalising distractions that would cloud or obscure what He has for me.
To daily breakfast with Jesus is to keep His focus for me. Even after breakfast the focus is to be held. It is Jesus gift for me.
