6 Thoughts on God's Silence
Soul Snack 91/14 ... Bouncing into my Inbox last Saturday were two emails separated by half the world. Almost with a simultaneous precision they both raised the same dilemma - Why is God silent to me?
This is a common lament to men who desire to explore life's spiritual realities. It is a fearful thing to worship a silent God. Both the Psalmists and prophets wrestled likewise with God:
TO God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God. (Psalms 83:1)
Some brief thoughts:
- God is not like man, He does not chatter aimlessly; for where there are many words sin is not far way. (Proverbs 10:19)
- God's silence does not indicate his disinterest, disapproval or inattention. He is never too busy for His child.
- Silence is not to dispel faith but to multiply it. Faith is choosing to move forward even under a quiet heaven. It is a confirming grace of Divine intimacy.
- God may not in fact be silent, but the ability to hear may have been filtered or lost. (Often I fear through busyness, our own inattention.)
- God whispers and He does not yell as man would do to gain attention. It is an imperative to be close. (1 Kings 19:12)
- God does speak. He reveals Himself and His intentions to His prophets, those who fear Him and the humble. (Psalm 25:9 & 14, Hosea 12:10, Amos 3:7)
God's apparent silence may be deafening, but Oswald Chambers explained that silence as God's gift, is the first sign of intimacy with Him.

Your heart is completely transparent before the Lord and still He loves you.
