3 Bible Verses I Taught My 3 Kids
Children are not born with an owner's manual, much to my dismay. Some printed directions for correct and trouble free operation would have been thoughtful of Heaven.
In that gym of my mind (the only gym I know) I would wrestle, and then whine to my long-suffering wife after the birth of each child - why doesn't the Lord also provide a handbook with births, after all General Motors is sufficiently thoughtful to place one in the glove-box of each new car it delivers?
However, with the pace of a sprinting snail a rare fact dawned upon me, it wasn't God who was the thoughtless one - it was I. (I too suspect that this fact is of no surprise to you dear reader.)
The Bible contains the instructions for life, and Proverbs multiplies its wisdom.
So, after a too tardy start, I explored the hallowed pages and sought the ancient ways that guard this breathing heritage from our Lord to my wife and I.
Proverbs 1:8 made it all pretty darn clear...
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
Under a surprisingly rapid dawn it occurred to me to embrace the good Lord's counsel - so I did.
I chose these three verses in particular to instruct my three children with:
- I will set before my eyes no vile things... (Psalm 101:3a)
- How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. (Psalm 119:9)
- Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them’. (Ecclesiastes 12:1)
What verses would you choose or have chosen?
