4 Enemies to the Soul
Soul Snack 186/14 ... Rest is the life-long chase of all souls.
Rest is stolen when wickedness punctures the soul. It tears at the heart for all who would rule themselves.
There are four heavily starched and wicked items that outfit each man who would be his own emperor. They hang in the wardrobe of his mind and daily devour his peace:
- The shirt of discontentment = strivings,
- The helmet of covetousness = dissatisfaction,
- The shoes of impatience = the theft of enjoying NOW and
- The hole-filled trousers of despair = loss of hope and promise.
These four enemies are deceitful evils to the soul; offering peace but only supplying restlessness.
The first three are found in satan's shop windows and bought at his request. They conspire against self-restraint, and when purchased rob tomorrow's well-being. For tomorrow then becomes a slave to the ever-seeking of more, the debt of yesterday, or both.
To those who choose to wear such clothing neither reward nor relief will ever be found.
Choose not to do anything today that will cost you tomorrow.
Only the humble assertion of impotence pursues the wisdom that gains self-restraint.
Humility is recognising that you are nothing more than another beggar at the throne of grace.
When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. (Jonah 3:6)
It is in stepping from your emperor's throne that rest is available.
"Thou has created us for Thyself and we are restless until we fully rest in thee." ~ St Augustine
