Suffering's Chalice ~ B ... Comfort
Soul Snack 112/14 ... The good Lord lifted and then shared the chalice of suffering at his Last Suffer. Jesus washed His betrayer's feet. He then advised His disciples to copy Him.
Life's Holy Grail - the reason for all manner of suffering, has become the flagstaff on a mountaintop or the banner flapping on a hill. It is where we peer for the reasons of shame, injustice, betrayal, ill-will, tragedy and sickness. Cries are also hurled to heaven, yet seemingly fall upon deaf ears.
BUT God remains good and listens attentively for He remains:
- the God of those leftover, the forgotten and the foolish.
- the seeker of the lost, the least, the last and the lonely.
- a father to the fatherless, a family to the orphan, a lover of the unloved and a the restorer of the broken.
When the Holy Grail of reason is never found, and pain lingers well mpast its 'use by' date the unwise choose to flee God, yet why?
Why wouldn't anyone want to seek the strong arms of He who fights wars, lives in abuse, is heaped in disbelief, covered in shame and bled upon Calvary - indeed, all for them?
Isn't He then the only one who can truly sympathsize with weakness, and grasp ill-gotten suffering? The Lord of Calvary can truly say 'been there, done that'?
There is often not a visible reason for suffering, but there is surely an invisible shoulder to lean upon, and an eternal heart to cry out to?
Christ's sufferings overflow to the disciple, so too His comfort.
For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. (2 Corinthians 1:5)
When we have drunk from Christ's chalice of suffering is it not reasonable to also drink from His chalice of comfort?
In silence ask the Lord for comfort, drink from His chalice afresh - His wine is only ever a prayer, a verse, or that still small voice away.
