Pride is blind!
Pride makes men strong and mean. It is a wicked strength and a terrible taskmaster.
Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) reflected on the hypocrisy of pride. His sermons, devotions and writings are perpetually held in high Christian esteem. SoulSupply agrees:
Pedley, who was a well-known natural simpleton, often said, "God help the fool". None are more ready to pity the folly of others than those who share it themselves.
"There is no love among Christians,'' cries the man who is destitute of true charity.
"Zeal has vanished," exclaims the idle talker.
"Oh for more consistency," groans out the hypocrite.
"We want more Godliness," protests the false pretender.
As in the old legend, the wolf preached against sheep stealing, so too very many hunt down those sins in others which they gladly and blindly shelter in themselves.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Matthew 7:3-5)
