Christmas Holds A Sword
There is a significant absurdity to Christmas.
Christmas is the mighty arm of God stretched down to an earth enveloped by darkness and imprisoned to sin. He grasps it through a Babe and then shakes this earth so hard that all must hear Him.
Heaven's only child would raise both His hands in mercy, but too He promised the sword.
“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:34)
Christmas does not hint, nor is it gentle. This Babe, destined to be murdered, has rightly claimed priority over all earth's allegiances. He demands an uncompromised devotion, and too promises a just judgement day, for:
Jesus will not be ground to the dust.
Christmas is no witness to a soft annual easy-believism secured by advertising, frivolity and an equally excusable self-indulgence.
Christmas is the bellow of Heaven seeking violent men to be violent with them-selves, and take hold forcibly of all this Babe's claims over them.
The kingdom of heaven and the Christ of the Cross are not for the weak-kneed, the people-pleaser or those who flee strong opposition; for Christmas too holds a sword.
From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. (Matthew 11:12)
Jesus did not enter this world to change it, but to claim it.
