3 Rear Vision Lessons
You've been (are?) cannoned like a billiard ball and careened against hardened cushions by a blunt instrument others keep belting you with.
You question your faith - where is the God of grace, I have surely attempted to learn, love and listen?
Tempted to give up?
Tempted to retreat to the golden days?
You reflect - life felt easier in those old days; sure God wasn't there but the pain was less and time has now dulled that too.
How often does yesterday's grass appear greener than today's? Hope is now so lost that you expect tomorrow's lawn to be positively brown.
The true story (now four thousand years old) is told of an unnamed foolish woman now recorded in posterity.
God's judgement approached Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot's family were given an angelic 'heads up'. All Lot's family were instructed by the two angels to escape. They were to not turn back and look upon the evil they fled.
Consumed by a disobedient impulse (that she had little time to regret), Lot's retreating wife twisted her head around towards a blazing Sodom, only to became a salt pillar. Pillars of salt can only collapse.
Wind the clock forward four millennia, consider your resolve and dismiss your sulfur-fired doubts of faith for:
- the past cannot be recaptured,
- those who turn back lose what they were gaining and most importantly
- the second state becomes far worse than the first.
It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. (Hebrews 6:4-6)
