Emerson is described as being a ‘steady optimist. He offers in his quote a positivism, a divine self-sufficiency of mankind. He wrote from no Christian viewpoint, yet grappled with the ‘god within.’
God has placed an understanding of eternity within all men, yet we, at best, falteringly grasp at God. It is without wit mankind suppresses the truth, and so denies his very Creator.
Emerson observed the importance of what lies within all men, Jesus did too. For, we are not of those who live without hope, shrink back or are blind to revelation.
We dwell in THE light, and are His light to the world. His light lies within the disciple.
What a dreadful and destructive darkness would we drown under, if He who is in us is lesser than what lies around us! Then we are to be pitied and without hope. It would be likely then we learn to fear that which lies around us. Darkness may dare to enter in some kind of mighty rush and breach ‘our dam walls’, thus we drown in enduring and painful despair.
It remains true, a firm and sure Christian axiom, that with God on our side and inside, we and Him are a majority against any threatening giant.
The God inside of us is always greater than the enemy outside of us.
